Director's notes by Janet Feat
On one level, Spellbound is a modern fairytale peopled
with (of course) fairies and their Queen, goblins, elves, a gnome, pixie, ogre, tree spirit and
wizard... and humans, all of whom are quite clearly on the side of good or evil. As with most fairytales,
there is also a deeper symbolic level: we could see the forest as our world, and its different
inhabitants as the world's peoples. What will happen if, like Packard, we care not a jot for the
intricate interdependence of the world's resources? Perhaps the unity symbolised by the Deep Spirit
could be a way to help stem the onward rush of power and control by humanity...
It has been both challenging and rewarding to co-direct a new piece for the theatre with its author.
For Ric, the performance of Spellbound will be the culmination of two years' planning and preparation,
with flexibility and new ideas demanded of him throughout the rehearsal period. The creative support
of the cast and a host of others has been invaluable: 'That's no problem' has been said so often,
it must be a record! I am glad to have been part of the process, hope you will be pleased with
the result, and feel that it is particularly appropriate that we are presenting Spellbound in
the RAODS Diamond Jubilee year.
