When Frederic's father instructs maid of all work Ruth that his sea-loving boy is to be apprenticed as a “pilot”, she, being slightly deaf, mishears and sets Frederic to work with a band of “pirates”. Now at twenty-one he is a fully-fledged brigand, but has decided to give up his apprenticeship and become an honest citizen. He meets and falls in love with Mabel, daughter of the Major-General. When his fellow pirates attack the home and daughters of the Major-General Frederic finds himself fighting on the side of the police but soon has to change sides as his apprenticeship is not yet finished and he is duty-bound to support his fellow pirates. The pirates win, but when they realise they are Englishmen with a duty to their beloved Queen Victoria they renounce their evil profession and lots of happy marriages ensue. Songs include: 'Poor Wandering One', 'I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major-General', 'With Cat-Like Tread', 'A Policeman's Lot Is Not A Happy One'. Possibly the most famous G&S with the Major-General's tongue-twisting song, the Policeman's chorus and the difficulties of Frederic and his duty. All the usual mayhem and frenetic misunderstandings that we love in a G&S opera with superb music, exciting action and a totally unbelievable plot!
